Indoor Air Quality

According to the EPA, most of us spend much of our time indoors. Indoor air pollution in the air that we breathe in our homes, in schools, and in offices can put us at risk for health problems. Some pollutants can be chemicals, gases, pollen, dust, lint, dust mite debris, second hand smoke, microscopic allergens, virus carriers, smog particles, pet dander, and living organisms like airborne bacteria, mold spores, and pests.

Several sources of air pollution are in homes, schools, and offices. Some pollutants cause health problems such as aggravation of allergies, which can cause allergic reactions such as sore eyes, burning in the nose and throat, inflamed sinus, headaches, or fatigue. Other pollutants cause or worsen allergies, respiratory illnesses (such as asthma), heart disease, cancer, and other serious long-term conditions. Some pollutants in the air are especially harmful for children, elderly people, and those with health problems.

According to the EPA, one of the best ways to address the issue of indoor air pollution is to use an air purifier to remove airborne contaminants to help reduce allergy symptoms caused by poor indoor air quality.

Indoor Air Humidity

Additionally, the air inside your home should be at the proper humidity level to ensure a healthy environment. According to the EPA and other indoor environmental experts, the relative humidity inside your home should fall somewhere between 30 and 50 percent, depending on the temperature outside. More specifically, when the outside temperature is 20°F or above, the recommended relative humidity for inside is 35 to 40 percent.

Low humidity causes static electricity, dry skin and hair, itching and chapping. Mucous membranes in the nose and throat dry out, increasing your discomfort and susceptibility to colds and respiratory illness. At low humidity levels, body moisture evaporates so quickly you feel chilled even at higher thermostat settings.

High humidity levels can produce constantly fogged or iced windows, musty odor and/or a clammy feel to the air. During cold weather, condensation in the lower corners and edges on prime (inside) windows is common.

To properly regulate your indoor humidity level, it is recommended to use a whole house furnace humidifier. If you wish to humidify specific rooms within your house, a portable humidifier is a good option as well. If you do use a portable humidifier, it is important to maintain a clean tank and basin for the unit to ensure that bacteria growth, water and mineral scale do not inhibit the performance of the unit and cause any bad odors due to bacteria and algae growth. Newfilter.com offers many products that safely treat your water to ensure that your unit and improve the quality of your air. To monitor the humidity level of your indoor air, it is recommended to use a hygrometer.
